Messiah: The Messianic Psalms (22 and 110)

Key Prophetic Psalms

While Isaiah 53 is the most famous, Psalm 22 and Psalm 110 provide critical details regarding the Messiah's nature and death.

Psalm 22: The Crucifixion Psalm

Written by David approximately 1,000 years before Jesus, it describes a method of execution (crucifixion) that did not yet exist in Israel:

• Psalm 22:1: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Jesus' cry on the cross).
• Psalm 22:16: "They pierced my hands and my feet."
• Psalm 22:18: "They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment."

Psalm 110: The Priest-King

This is the most quoted Psalm in the New Testament.

• The Divinity: "The LORD says to my Lord: 'Sit at my right hand...'" (Psalm 110:1). David refers to the Messiah as his "Lord," implying the Messiah is greater than David.
• The Priesthood: "You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek" (Psalm 110:4). This establishes that the Messiah is not just a King, but an eternal Priest.
